A great welcome




In 2012 Monique Gilbert (Belgium) set up a project with her Crossroads students.
She asked them to choose an abstract painting made between 1951-1961 by Belgian painter
Paul Van Hoeydonck. Students needed to interpret – not copy – his work into a textile. They could use a detail, colour or a shape to make it their own design. All techniques were allowed.
The Art Quilt must measure 80 cm x 80 cm even if the original work has a different size.
The making of the Quilts were discussed during Monique’s workshops. The collection received support from Viking Sewing Machines Husqvarna for exhibiting the Art Quilts at the European Patchwork Meeting in September 2013.

Introductie

Monique Gilbert begon met traditioneel quilten in 1984 in België, een land zonder quilt traditie. Snel maakte zij haar eigen designs.
Door de samenwerking met “de Kunstbank” in 1989 kwam zij tot het besef dat er nog veel werk te doen was voor het promoten van quilts als kunst.  Zij coördineerde Europa Quilts 1 en 2 in Leuven en is mede oprichter van Q.Art Belgium een netwerk voor quilt kunstenaars in België.

Zij gebruikt stoffen uit haar voorraad (commerciële, hand geverfd, gezeefdrukt, gestempeld en niet-traditionele stoffen). Alle Art Quilts zijn machinaal gemaakt. Wanneer zij aan een project werkt is het haar missie om alle materiaal uit haar voorraad te gebruiken. Zij zegt: “Soms moet ik daardoor mijn initieel idee laten varen. Dikwijls is dit dan een beter design. De hedendaagse quilts gemaakt door Monique Gilbert worden tentoongesteld in Europa, USA, Australië en Japan. Haar passie is nieuwe technieken aanleren aan gelijkgezinde quilters.

Introduction

Monique Gilbert started traditional quilting in 1984 in a non quilting land Belgium. Soon she made her own designs. Working together with “de Kunstbank” in 1989 made her realise that a lot of work was to be done to promote Art Quilts in Europe. She coordinated Europa Quilts 1 and 2 in Leuven and is co-founder of Q.Art Belgium which exists to provide a network for quilt artists living in Belgium. Monique is member of SAQA and her Art Quilts are regularly selected for touring exhibitions.

She uses fabric from her stash (commercial, hand dyed , silk screened, stamped and non traditional). All the quilts are done by machine. When she works on a project it is her mission to find everything she needs for the piece in her stash. She says: “It happens that therefore I have to change my initial idea and mostly it is then my best design”. Her contemporary wall hangings are shown in Europe and USA. Her passion is teaching new techniques to like-minded quilters.
